How to Store Cigars Without a Humidor (Temporary Solutions)

You just bought a handful of great cigars — but you do not own a humidor yet. Or maybe you are traveling, or your humidor is full. Either way, you need to know how to store cigars without a humidor before they dry out and turn into expensive kindling.

The good news: keeping cigars fresh temporarily is easier than most people think. Here is what you need to know, from the science of humidity to the best emergency storage methods.

Why Humidity Matters for Cigars

Premium cigars are made from natural tobacco leaves that were fermented, aged, and rolled with a specific moisture content. They are happiest at 65 to 72 percent relative humidity and around 70 degrees Fahrenheit — the famous "70/70 rule."

When cigars dry out, the wrapper cracks, the oils evaporate, and the flavor goes flat and harsh. A dried-out cigar burns hot and fast and tastes like disappointment. On the other hand, too much humidity invites mold and makes cigars burn unevenly or go out constantly.

The goal of any storage method — humidor or not — is to hold that humidity steady. Fluctuation is the real enemy: cigars handle a consistent 65 percent far better than swinging between 50 and 80.

Method 1: The Tupperdor (Best Temporary Solution)

The tupperdor — a sealed plastic container with a humidity source — is the gold standard of humidor-free storage. It is cheap, it works remarkably well, and many serious smokers use one as a permanent overflow humidor.

Here is how to build one:

  1. Get an airtight plastic container — a food storage container with a locking lid works perfectly. Size it to your collection.
  2. Add a humidity source. The easiest option is a humidity pack, which maintains a precise humidity level with zero maintenance. One 60-gram pack handles roughly 25 cigars.
  3. No humidity pack? Use a small piece of sponge dampened with distilled water (never tap water — minerals and chlorine cause problems). Wring it out well, place it in a small open container or bag inside the tupperdor so it does not touch the cigars directly.
  4. Add your cigars, seal the lid, and store the container somewhere cool and dark.

Check it every week or two. A tupperdor can keep cigars in great shape for months.

Method 2: The Sealed Bag

For a few cigars over a few days to a couple of weeks, a heavy-duty zip-top freezer bag does the job. Squeeze out the excess air, add a small humidity pack if you have one, seal it, and keep it away from heat and sunlight.

Without a humidity pack, a sealed bag will buy you several days — the cigars' own moisture stays trapped inside. This is the perfect solution for travel or for the cigars you plan to smoke this weekend. Just do not expect it to work for months; it is a short-term fix.

Method 3: The Cooler (For Larger Collections)

If you have a lot of cigars and no humidor, a clean cooler makes an excellent large-scale tupperdor — the cigar community calls it a "coolerdor." Coolers are insulated, seal tightly, and hold humidity beautifully.

Clean it thoroughly first (you do not want your cigars tasting like last summer's cookout), add cedar trays or boxes if you have them, toss in a few humidity packs, and you have storage for hundreds of cigars. Many collectors use coolerdors as their primary long-term storage.

What NOT to Do

Do not use the refrigerator. Fridges are far too dry and too cold, and your cigars will absorb food odors. This is the fastest way to ruin good tobacco.

Do not use the freezer for storage. Freezing is sometimes used briefly for beetle prevention, but as a storage method it dries cigars out and risks damaging the wrappers.

Do not leave cigars in the open. A cigar left on a desk will start drying out within a day or two. The cellophane wrapper they come in slows this slightly, but it is not a long-term solution.

Do not place them near heat or sunlight. Windowsills, car dashboards, and radiator tops are cigar killers. Cool, dark, and stable wins every time.

Do not soak them. If your cigars have already dried out, you cannot bring them back by wetting them directly. Gradual rehumidification in a sealed container with a humidity source can recover mildly dried cigars over several weeks — but a crispy, cracked cigar is gone for good.

How Long Can Cigars Last Without a Humidor?

It depends on the method and the environment:

  • Sealed bag, no humidity pack: several days to two weeks
  • Tupperdor with humidity packs: months, easily — this is genuinely viable long-term storage
  • Coolerdor with humidity packs: months to years
  • Left in the open: hours to a couple of days before noticeable drying

The takeaway: a tupperdor is not just a stopgap. Done right, it performs as well as many desktop humidors.

When to Invest in a Real Humidor

Temporary solutions work, but a proper humidor earns its place when:

  • Your collection is growing. If you are buying boxes instead of singles, you need real capacity.
  • You want aging. Cigars develop deeper, smoother flavors with months or years of stable aging — something a dedicated humidor with Spanish cedar lining does best.
  • You want the ritual. There is something deeply satisfying about opening a beautiful wooden humidor. For many smokers, it is part of the hobby itself.

When you are ready, look for a humidor with a good seal, a reliable hygrometer, and Spanish cedar lining. Desktop humidors suit most smokers; travel humidors are perfect for the road; cabinet humidors are for the truly committed.

Keep Your Cigars Fresh, Whatever You Use

The best storage method is the one you actually use consistently. A tupperdor with humidity packs will keep your cigars in perfect smoking condition while you decide whether the hobby — and a beautiful humidor — is right for you.
